POLICE GEAR REVIEW

CASIO G-SHOCK DW5600E

In a world of gadgets and overpriced gizmos there are a few items which stand the test of time.  So much that half of all millionaires report wearing a Casio as their daily watch.  The 5600 series can be found in most large department stores for less than $40.00, and the G-Shock version can take a beating that most watches will never see.

With G-Shock technology and a "set and forget" format, the watch will impress the operator for years to come.  The frame is medium to small, and fits well on those who do not like bulky watches that can get caught up at work.

For more information search around on the google shopping tab or visit casio directly at http://www.shopcasio.com/category/0_1_a_4/42

EBERLESTOCK J51 WARHAMMER

Need a tactical pack that can make the long haul?  This unique system has so many features it would be impossible to list them.  Just know that the folks at Eberlestock burn the midnight oil to give operators some really incredible packs.

The Warhammer (shown above) is unique because it can be used a ruck sack, weapon transport bag, shooting rest, gear hauler, and can hold more weight than many other bags in its class.  The secret behind the design of the Warhammer is its ability to split open once the top is pulled back.  That split also provides the opportunity to zip in panels which double the storage space of the pack.

For more information on the pack and its abilities visit www.eberlestock.com

LUMINOX 3051

We continue to abuse our Luminox 3051 Blackout edition and are happy to report it is still holding up very strong to daily patrol shifts.  It has been bumped, scraped, and all around beat up without showing any real signs of wear.

The watch is very straight forward, and offers very little in the "wiz bang" department but thats what we like the most about the watch.  The hands and hour will continue to glow for many years to come, and the only lesson we have learned the hard way is to replace the battery by a licensed dealer when the time comes.

We made the fatal mistake of taking the watch to a repair center that did not properly seal the watch and it fogged after an afternoon in the water.

FNH PSR BALLISTA

FN Herstal USA is no stranger to designing excellent weapon systems, and they are getting ready to jump into the modular sniper rifle market with the soon to be relased FNH PSR BALLISTA rifle.

The frame of the multi-caliber rifle will allow the operator to change from a .338 Lapua, .300 Win Mag, or .308 Win..  We have yet to get our hands on a test gun to see just how fast we can change the calibers out, but imagine the folks at FN Herstal are going to be bringing an excellent addition to the evolving market.

KERSHAW CLASH KNIFE 1605

This is one of the best values knives on the market, and it is built to endure the harshest environments.  The Kershaw 1605 (shown above) is available in a variety of configurations, and we have come to love every feature on this knife.

Perhaps the most notable feature on the knife is its patented opening system.  On the back of the knife there is a portion of the blade which protrudes from the back.  When touched the blade quickly comes to life and opens as quickly as many knives which literally sell for ten times the cost.  The blade is made of quality material, and its pocket clip is securely anchored.

We found this knife on the internet for less than $30.00, and more detailed information can be found at www.kershaw-knives.net

POLICE GEAR REVIEW

BURRIS FASTFIRE II

One of our favorite test guns in the shop is the one shown above, and features the Burris Fast Fire II red dot optic.  The optic is certainly not the most expensive in the bunch or offers the most features, but it does an excellent job of allowing the user to get on target in a hurry.

The installation of the optic did not require any special tools, and was practically zeroed right out of the box so we made very little adjustments.  We were a little skeptical about having to take the optic off the firearm to replace the battery, but have had no problems or loss of power in over a year that we have been using it.

The optic really did an amazing job in low light conditions, and since it is powered by battery the optic automatically adjusted to bright conditions allowing us to view our targets on sunny days.  Red dot optics on handguns will someday become standard for all police officers, and having a jump on the industry allows Burris to refine and continue to push out quality products.

GARMONT T4 BOOTS

Garmont offers an incredible pair of lightweight hiking boots weighing in at just 565 grams.  The boots have all the elements of success with Goretex waterproofing and Vibram soles.  The synthetic upper offers strength and the lacing system allows the operator to get in and out of his or her boots quickly.

These boots can serve double duty and offer a sturdy platform when working a long construction detail in the summer or just going for a hike in the summer with the family.  Right now Extreme Outfitters are offering $30.00 off the boots, and the deal can be found by going to http://www.extremeoutfitters.us/garmntt4gtx.aspx

Wanco has a great solutions for school zones, high accident areas, long term construction zones, or any area in a community that would benefit from having a radar speed sign always present.  The amber LED display is available in either 18-inch or 12-inch and can be permanently attached to a pole preventing the need to charge the unit.

For those who do not have the option of hard wiring the sign there is also an option to use a 12 v dc battery power with 50 w solar panel charging system.  A number of accessories are available with the optional traffic data collector and it can count up to 57,000 vehicles, record speed, direction, length, and date and time.

ELBECO V1 EXTERNAL VEST CARRIER

Elbeco is gaining momentum with its V1 External Vest Carrier, and as police departments across the country are seeing a benefit from using external vest carriers for patrol.  At right around $75.00 the vest carrier allows officers to put a little more air between them and their body armor.  This particular vest carrier has velcro straps and can be utilized with either conventional badges or embroidery.

There is a pen opening on each pocket and access to pockets is the regular flap system.  For more information on the Elbeco V1 External Vest Carrier visit http://www.elbeco.com/

STALKER PATROL RADAR

The newest addition to the Stalker lineup is the Patrol series.  The unit has a new LCD display which displays bright white letters against black so it can be easily viewed in bright conditions.  The antennas are waterproof avoiding the need to pull the unit inside every time it rains.

Stalker has another first for police gear, and is utilizing a USB cable for the first time to connect the unit.  The back of the unit also has serial ports and additional printer ports to allow connection to cameras, or digitally printed ticket systems.

BURRIS AR 132 RED DOT OPTIC

Burris adds another viable option for shooters needing a red dot optic.  The AR 132 provides a rugged housing with options of either using a red or green dot.  The optic is offered in a 1x magnification version or a 536 model version which offers a 5x magnification.

The optic can be used with black cross hairs during the day and quickly flipped to either the red or green dot system to adjust to any situation.  Burris continues to offer reliable optic and we are certain this is just another tool to their growing product line.

MAGELLAN BACKUP CAMERA

Magellan seems to be turning the corner with their latest invention and has figured out a way to turn their GPS units into a backup camera.  Backing up police vehicles can be troublesome if cages are installed or the area is very poorly lit.

The camera is designed to be paired with the Safety Series Magellan GPS navigator1 or RoadMate Pro 9165T.  The navigator guides you when driving, and the back-up camera provides a measure of safety as you begin and end your trip.

When you put your vehicle in reverse, your Magellan navigator will automatically switch from navigation mode to rear view mode, allowing you to see what is behind your vehicle.  For more information visit http://www.magellangps.com/Products/RoadMate_Back-up-Camera/Magellan-RoadMate-Wireless-Back-up-Camera

NOVESKE BACKPACK

Many tactical companies are quickly identifying a void in the market, and that is being able to transport your AR style rifle while being able to blend into society and with ease.  Noveske who makes a number of innovative products for the tactical community produces a backpack specifically designed for rifle transport.

The bag will hold a fully assembled and loaded rifle 28 inches or shorter, and can also accommodate larger rifles if the upper and lower are split (takes all of 30 seconds and can be achieved without tools).  We love the design for a number of reasons, but mostly because it enables the operator the ability to leave the rifle in a quickly deployable configuration while being stored in a safe.

So many cases are large, bulky and do not allow the individual to free their hands to carry other critical items.  There is also ample room to carry hearing protection, additional magazines, water, and many other items.  For more information visit http://noveskerifleworks.com/cgi-bin/imcart/display.cgi?item_id=backpack&cat=165&page=1&search=&since=&status=&title=

MOSSBERG FLEX SYSTEM

Mossberg was really drawing traffic at the Shot Show and seems to have done an excellent job at their modular system.  The Flex System allows the end user to swap parts out to meet the given task.  They have created a number of configurations for home defense, law enforcement, hunting, sporting, and many more.

The main website for the Flex System can be found at http://www.flexyourmossberg.com or you can go directly to the video to see just how quickly stocks, barrels, and handles can be taken on and off.  http://www.flexyourmossberg.com/images/mossbergflex.mov

HERA ARMS LINEAR COMPENSATOR

This linear compensator from Hera Arms is not a silencer, and is considered a compensator with a forward porting design (great to avoid silencer paperwork and also helps to avoid legal issues).  The most interesting part of this compensator is it promises to lower the noise a shooter hears since it channels the energy to the front of the gun.

TROY BATTLE RAIL DELTA

If you like having a rail system that reaches the end of your AR type rifle but have a front sight post you do not want to saw off, this new battle rail system from Troy allows you to keep your front post and add the rail.  It is a huge benefit when grabbing a hot rifle, and allows the operator to focus on threats instead of a hot barrel.

With so much muscle memory that goes into shooting it is a surprise it took this long for shotgun manufactures to catch on to the niche in creating magazine fed shotguns that use the same type of controls as either an M16 or AK style rifle.

We expect to see sales in both Akdal, and Saiga this year and hope to add a few test rifles to our arsonal of innovative guns this year.

TRIJICON ACOG - AA BATTERY

US PALM ASP-C PLATE CARRIER WITH ARMOR

If you take nothing else away from this list please consider this item.  Armor helps officers, home owners, and would be victims protect vital organs and will stop heavy caliber rifle rounds.  The stystem is "ready to go" and has an MSRP of $399.00 with the armor plates already installed.  This should be in the trunk of every police car regardless of size, and we have found it to be effective even at home.  Imagine you hear someone in your home, and you grab a gun, but have no ballistic protection, place to put your gun, or restraints to secure the person if they decide to give up...This plate carrier will give you piece of mind and then some.

SHELLBACK TRIPLE STACK FOR PLATE CARRIER

If you decide on getting a plate carrier and want something simple to help keep your ammo, this system available at Shellback Tactical slips on the front of any M.O.L.L.E. system carrier (see US Palm above) and gives you 3 extra mags of your duty weapon as well as 3 mags for your AR type rifle.  The pistol mags are held in place with the assistance of a magnetic bottom, and we have yet to have a problem with our unit.

WINDHAM WEAPONRY

With a saturated market it has become difficult for Americans to pick an AR style rifle, and decide which gun is the best investment.  If you are a huge fan of American made products, and want to support a come back company check out Windham Weaponry.

The company is formerly known as Bushmaster, and after financial troubles the employees scraped up the cash collectively as a group to reopen as Windham Weaponry.  The rifles are still manufactured in the United States, and by the very same hands that have provided consumers with quality firearms for years.

The rifles are affordable, retain all of the modern amenities we have come to appreciate, and send a message to the folks at Windham that the American dream is still alive and firing away.

HMMWV PROGRAM

If your a federal, state, or local law enforcement agency you can submit an acquisition for surplus military vehicles, weapons, and gear.  The unusual amount of quality HMMWV's are due to an overwhelming shift of branches to utilize the MRAP which provides a safer platform for IED explosives.

In addition to low mileage vehicles, the military also has high caliber sniper rifles, personal protection equipment, and endless pallets of gear that can utilized by law enforcement agencies.  There are a few hoops to jump through to pick the gear up, but clicking a few links and faxing a few forms is certainly worth a vehicle that can handle storm details and rescue work for many years to come.

AMSEC DEFENSE VAULT

Here is the scenario, you get home from working a long shift and as usual you cannot sleep.  You hear a window break and instantly know someone is inside of your home by the sound of footsteps.  As the steps get closer to your bedroom, what is your plan?  Many people across America have firearms secured in a safe that may not be immediately accessible.

This safe solves that and allows any homeowner to keep both a long gun and hand gun readily accessible from your bed.  In our scenario you in all likelihood could roll out of bed and grab the handgun, allow your significant other if you have one to wait on the side of the bed near the shotgun while calling 911.

The AMSEC Defense Vault (shown above) utilizes valuable space under a bed to store firearms on a unique slide out tray allowing for easy access in the dark.  Aside from easy access the panel is illuminated, and mounting brackets allow you to secure it in virtually any configuration.

Look for more in the coming months on this vault, but we can already see a tremendous value in having this vault, a 12 gauge home defense shotgun, and a high capacity .45 handgun.

MOTOSHOT TARGET SYSTEM

The days of shooting at paper targets from the 15 yard line are dissolving.  Similar to the days when agencies realized the effectiveness of carrying semi-automatics as primary duty weapons, firearm instructors are seeing tangible results by evolving training tactics for range training.

The MOTO SHOT system shown above is remotely operated, portable, and capable.  It brings a real world scenario to the officers being trained, and helps them maintain current tactics.  The system can be manipulated to meet the needs of the scenario, and the bad guy (target) can be configured to drop when hit with shots.

CONDOR EDC BAG

The Condor EDC bag is a versatile solution for your every day carry needs. The bag is made of sturdy nylon and is of sound construction. It has a sling design that allows you to carry the bag slung across your shoulder, giving you easy access to the bag when you need it. There is also an additional strap that helps secure the bag around your waist. This assists in keeping the bag secure and in place in the event you need to run while wearing it. There are many pockets and compartments for all your weapons and gear.

During our test officers were able to carry a full size Smith and Wesson M&P 40 and other comparable handguns with two additional magazines. The handgun is secured with a universal holster that adheres to the inside weapon compartment with Velcro. The holster is sold separately from the bag, but it is a vital purchase. Velcro wraps the handgun and an elastic strap holds the weapon in place. The compartment is sealed with a heavy duty one way zipper.

The compartment for carrying extra magazines is secured with a quick release clip buckle. After you release the buckle, you flip up the flap and you can then access the compartment using the heavy duty two way zipper. The compartment features four elastic loops that can hold magazines, flashlights, etc.

In between the weapon compartment and the extra magazine compartment, there is a two way zipper compartment that is goo for holding credentials, cell phones, gps, handcuffs, or any other items that you wish to carry. The compartment is spacious and features two pockets. One solid fabric, and the other mesh.

The EDC bag also features exterior MOLLE attachment site, that allow you to add on to the bag. We tested the black bag, but it is also available in OD, Coyote, and Multicam.

Please support officer owned businesses if purchasing and consider getting the bag from our brothers over at American Infidel by clicking here http://www.americaninfidelinc.com/product_p/156.htm

DIEHARD PORTABLE POWER PACK 1150

Agencies spend thousands outfitting police vehicles with electrical equipment.  Often there are instances where officers would benefit greatly by having a multi-use portable power pack at their disposal.

We have been testing the Diehard Portable Power 1150 model (shown above) and are impressed by its utility.  The purpose of this unit is to provide emergency power on the go, and this particular model does so in a number of ways. It offers the ability to jumpstart vehicles, inflate tires, provide conventional outlet power, 12v PowerPoint access, and even USB charging for electronic devices.

Once the unit is fully charged it switches to float mode and consistently monitors the battery level to ensure readiness.  If the power pack is in a vehicle for an extended time it can be checked by quickly pushing a button to see the battery percentage.

After speaking with a representative from Sears we also learned the internal battery can be replaced at a fraction of the cost once the power pack loses its ability to charge.

LIFE CUBE

Life Cube has set out to change the way we respond to emergencies and has developed a structure that goes up in minutes.  The inflatable structure provides shelter, heat, and even food for five.  The Life Cube (shown above in various configurations) also has a hard floor and proprietary system that inflates the walls in moments with the use of air.

The exterior is made from military grade fabrics that have been tested and abused by our troops for years. When boxed up into the cube the unit fits in the bed of a truck, can be rolled around with its mobility system, and promises to provide aide for towns encountering an emergency or disaster.

There is also talk of a "recreation version" of their tent which promises to change the game for campers, hunters, and off-duty police officers who like to get out into nature after a busy week.
